These things have all had an impact on many different video games made in Japan. ![]() When playing a video game developed in Japan, one may notice many Japanese cultural aspects such as religion, history, manga, anime, and especially popular culture. Video games and culture are tangled in a web of interconnectedness that is especially present in Japan. Japanese video games have had a major impact on many cultures around the world, but none more so than the culture of Japan. ![]() Japanese video game companies have had such an impact on the industry that when there was a video game recession in the 1980’s Nintendo’s console, the NES, helped launch the industry out of the recession (Aoyama, 2003). Aside from the United States’ Microsoft, the majority of gaming consoles and a large number of games have been created by Japanese companies such as Nintendo, Sony, Square Enix and SEGA. Both of these countries have developed thousands of games and have produced millions of dollars’ worth of gaming hardware in the past four decades. Within this industry are two powerhouse countries, the United States and Japan. Video game production is one of the biggest entertainment industries in the world.
